How to set up Bing Places for Business
- Time
- 30 to 60 minutes, plus verification
- Risk
- Low, but mismatched details across listings hurt you everywhere.
Why bother with Bing
Bing Places for Business is the free listing behind Bing's map and local results, and the search built into Windows and Microsoft's apps. Fewer businesses fill it in than Google's, which makes a complete listing stand out.
Step 1: Sign in
Go to bingplaces.com and sign in with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account. Use an account the business controls, not a staff member's personal one.
Step 2: Import from Google, or start fresh
If you already have a Google Business Profile, choose the option to import it: Bing copies your name, address, hours, categories and photos, and an imported listing can often skip a separate verification. Otherwise, search for your business. If Bing already has a listing, claim it. If not, add a new one.
Step 3: Get the core details exactly right
Your business name, address and phone number must match your website and your Google listing character for character: "Suite 4" and "Ste. 4" look like two businesses to a search engine. Pick the most specific category that fits, then add up to the allowed number of secondary ones.
Step 4: Verify
Bing offers verification by phone, text, email or a postcard with a PIN, depending on the business. Until you verify, the listing doesn't show. A postcard takes days, so request it right away.
Step 5: Fill in everything
Hours (including holidays), a short plain description, your website, photos of the outside, the inside and your work, and your services. Complete listings rank above thin ones.
Step 6: Keep it current
Update hours before holidays, answer reviews, and change the listing the same day you change your phone number or move. A wrong address on one map sends customers to the wrong door.
Should you do this yourself?
For one location with a Google profile already in order, yes: the import makes it quick. It gets harder with several locations, a listing someone else claimed, duplicate listings to merge, or details that differ across the web.
Rather not do this yourself? That's the sensible call for most people.
